Roald Dahl

Back in October, I shared my favorite scary movies. While I’ve seen all of them numerous times, I have to admit that The Witches is one of my absolute favorites. There’s just something about the way that Roald Dahl delivers life’s injustices through the eyes of the child that is appealing to me. I found out today (via A Cup of Jo) that the British postal service just released a set of stamps to celebrate the author. Did I mention that I inherited and added to a stamp collection as a child?

thanksgiving traditions

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! Today, my sister SG, B, and I are in Virginia with B’s family celebrating our good fortune and hard work. My favorite thing about the holidays is the opportunity to practice old and create new traditions. A few years back, my dad started a new tradition of serving a community meal at his church. B’s family always listens to Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant. SG loves to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. For some reason, I always associate Thanksgiving with Walt Whitman’s poem O Captain! My Captain! My dad had me memorize it in the first or second grade – not sure why but I’m sure it made a cute party trick – and I’ve taken to reading it every year around this time.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:

But O heart! heart! heart!O the bleeding drops of red,Where on the deck my Captain lies,Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father!This arm beneath your head;It is some dream that on the deck, You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchored safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won; Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!But I, with mournful tread,Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

What are your Thanksgiving traditions?

community

One of my favorite comedies on television right now is Community on NBC. The writing and plotting are intelligent and witty, the cast is brilliant and beautiful, and the potential for watching episodes over and over is enormous.

Here’s an example that demonstrates the thought that goes in to every episode. I didn’t even notice Abed in the background until I saw this montage of clips from the episode.

Now it seems the show is at risk of being cancelled, perhaps destined to join the ranks of My So Called Life, Freaks and Geeks, Arrested Development, and Friday Night Lights as under-appreciated gems.  If you haven’t seen it, watch a few episodes and let me know what you think.

my christmas wishlist

I love making lists, so Christmas was always one of my favorite holidays. Here, in no particular order, are some of my needs and wants.

Women’s Silk Interlock Glove Liner and SmartWool Cozy Mittens to keep my hands toasty warm in the cold months.

A Fountain Pen crafted from a bleacher seat originally part of the historic Yale Bowl.

A Customizable iPhone 4S Case to protect my new toy.

Two or three new exercise pants to replace my old worn-out ones.

Weatherproof winter boots for the upcoming snowy season.

Felted alpaca dryer balls from a farm in Mississippi to keep my clothes soft.

Of course, anything to help me accomplish something on my life list is appreciated!
